Heatherdene to Hope

I pressed the buzzer to get off the bus at Ladybower Inn but the driver didn't stop; he was new and didn't realise there was a bus stop there. So...I got off at Heatherdene, the next stop. I took some photos of the reservoir and then crossed over Ashopton Viaduct and walked up the steep footpath to Crookhill Farm and beyond.

I came down to the Snake Pass road at Hagg Farm, crossed over and walked up the other side of the valley, through the woods to Hope Cross. I then walked down the 'Roman Road' to Hope where I only had a couple of minutes to wait for the bus.

The weather was dark, miserable, and cold and so I didn't bother taking many photographs.

Hooton Pagnell Village Fete 2022

I went to Hooton Pagnell Village Fete today, the first time it's been held since 2019. Siobhan, my support worker gave me a lift there and then joined me later after seeing another client. I appreciated the lift, otherwise I would have had to catch the Barnsley bus to Hickleton and walk for a couple of miles along the road.

Great Longstone, Bubnell, and Baslow

I caught the local bus from Bakewell to Great Longstone and walked along Churlpit Lane, a green lane heading out to the northwest. I headed north along a country road for a few hundred yards and then took a path which went over the edge of Longstone Moor.

I took a well-defined path going along the slope of Longstone Edge but it led to a dead-end, so I had to turn back. This normally doesn't happen as I usually plough ahead and find a way but the route today was blocked with tipped silage, discarded barbed wire, heaps of soil and manure and piles of rock and rubble, and it was very overgrown and uneven ground so I don't know what else might have been lurking there. Since I've got home and looked at a zoomable map online it seems that it isn't actually a footpath.

I then took the quarry road going to the east, to which comes down onto the Calver to Hassop road. I crossed the road and continued, going down another country lane to Bubnell and caught the bus back to Sheffield at Devonshire Bridge at Baslow.

There was very little bright weather today and for a short period it even rained quite heavily; I had to briefly take shelter in a copse.

The old quarry road is quite rocky in places and I stubbed my toe and caused the sole on my left boot to partially detach. I think that's the third or fourth time this has happened - with different boots of course. I always carry a spare pair of socks in my rucksack, one of  which I used for a makeshift repair to get me back safely to the bus stop.

Worksop, Chesterfield Canal, Lindrick Golf Club, Woodsetts, Wallingwells, and Carlton in Lindrick

I'd planned a walk starting from Tuxford today visiting some areas to the south of Retford I'd not been to before, but the Retford bus didn't show up. When the Worksop bus turned up ten minutes later I got on that instead and started my alternative walk by heading to the west on the towpath of the Chesterfield Canal.  A friend, called John, was on this bus and so we spent an hour chatting about non-league football and our favourite local towns: he was travelling to Blyth to take some photographs of the village and visit the pubs.

I left the canal at Cinderhill Lock and took the footpath that heads north to Lindrick Golf Course; there are a couple of pretty houses on the way at Brancliffe Grange.

I briefly entered Woodsetts and then headed across the fields to the hamlet of Wallingwells and then caught the bus back to Doncaster at the first bus stop in Carlton in Lindrick. My original intention was to go a bit further to Langold but for the first time this summer my hay fever was bad and so I bailed out at the earliest opportunity.

Carlton in Lindrick, Scofton, and Worksop

Because of the likely problems on the railways today caused by the ongoing strikes I'm having to stick to the buses and travelling down to Nottinghamshire. I caught the Worksop bus to Carlton in Lindrick, visited the old part of the village and then walked along a couple of back roads until I reached a path going over to Scofton.

I joined the Chesterfield Canal at Osberton Lock and then walked along the towpath to Worksop; the towpath was the most overgrown I've ever seen it.
