Castleton and the Broken Road

A circular walk out to the west of Castleton today. I headed for the broken road at the foot of Mam Tor and then turned to the south and  looped round back to the village via Dirtlow Rake.

There were some impressive Halloween decorations in the village.

I had ten minutes to wait for my bus back to Sheffield; there have been some improvements made at Castleton Bus Station, extra seating and an electronic destination board.

Curbar Crossroads, Curbar, and Baslow

For the first half a mile I did the same route as last week's walk; there weren't any Highland cattle near the path today but I could see them out on the moor.

Instead of continuing down to Baslow I took a path on the right heading north to Curbar.

I'd barely reached the first houses in Curbar and then took the low level path which headed back south to Baslow Nether End. The bus was fifteen minutes late but it worked to my advantage, I'd just walked out of the toilets and crossed the road, and it turned up.

Curbar Crossroads, Baslow, Chatsworth Park and Edensor

I caught the Bakewell bus to Curbar Crossroads and walked down to Baslow, passing the Wellington Monument...and a lot of Highland cattle. The only close by cow that I didn't attempt to photograph wasn't happy and so headbutted me on my backside.

When I reached Baslow Nether End there was a crowd gathering outside the cafe; it's under new ownership and I think they were giving away free hot drinks.

I planned to walk further, maybe to Bakewell, but I finished the walk at the bus stop for Edensor because I felt a slight twinge in the back of my left knee; I didn't want to suffer another long-term injury.

I Forgot

I should have been walking in the Peak District today but I forgot to charge my mobile phone last night and so won't be going, I'm not going to be walking across the moors on only a 31% charge. The weather forecast for tomorrow is nearly as good so I'll try again then.
