Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum and Epworth

A trip out to Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum today, just over the boundary in Lincolnshire.

There are a few other vintage vehicles at the museum, a re-created 1950s prefab bungalow, a cycle museum and various items of street furniture. There are also a few standard diesel buses, one of which is sometimes used to take people on a tour of the Isle of Axholme, but not today because there was a shortage of volunteers.

I was a bit disappointed with my visit, there wasn't a lot to see. We did get a ride on one of the trolleybuses, but it's only a short loop circuit...the volunteer staff were very helpful and were able to answer all the questions I asked.

We continued on to Epworth for tea and cake at Hattie's Tearooms...I forgot to take any photographs of the town though.

Hope and Edale End

I travelled to Hope and headed north, keeping to the east of the river Noe until I reached Edale End and then returned using footpaths west of the river. The weather was lovely for the first hour but it soon clouded over and ended up quite chilly.

Foolow, Eyam, and Stoney Middleton

I caught the bus from Sheffield to Foolow and then headed south down the road towards the hamlet of Housley and joined the track to Eyam known as Tideswell Lane.

I only just entered Eyam at its western extremity but then headed south again down to the road in Middleton Dale. On the Ordnance Survey map it's shown as a single path going down through the old quarry workings but there are actually several paths branching off in all directions. The route I chose was difficult, steep steps, loose boulders and overgrown in places...maybe they were all just as bad though.

I expected only needing to cross the road and then head up the quarry road on the other side but I came out further to the east and had to walk along this busy road for a few hundred yars until I reached a bridleway going up to the road that passes through Cavendish Mill.

I walked down this road to Stoney Middleton, as I entered the village the road got very steep, I think it's one of the steepest in Derbyshire, certainly one of the steepest streets in a village.
