Three Local Churches

Thursday is the day I spend with my support worker. After going to the supermarket and getting my shopping done we drove to Sprotbrough hoping to go for a short walk beside the river. When we got to the carpark it was full and Siobhan commented that it was too muddy for her anyhow...it's never too muddy for me though.

She drove back up the hill and we had a little walk in the upper part of the village, in the area surrounding the church.

We then decided to visit the churches at two other local villages, Cadeby and High Melton, before returning to town.

Two Different Footpaths At Sprotbrough

I managed to find a couple of different footpaths going up through the woods at Sprotbrough today, they weren't particularly interesting but it was still a lovely walk.

The weir at Crumpsall was very loud this morning - it's officially called a 'rock ramp' though. 

The recently re-opened footpath along the riverbank was possibly even muddier than the one I'd been using that goes across a ploughed field. The muddy section was for only a few yards and by going this way I did get a slightly different approach to Newton.

This field, on the approach to Sprotbrough, was flooded the last time I was here.

I went out onto the island and found a comfortable spot to eat my sandwiches, right at the water's edge with a good view of the falls.

On my way back into town, as I was walking over North Bridge I spotted this ScotRail train waiting to go into the workshops.

Sandall Beat Wood, Armthorpe Pit Top, and Doncaster Racecourse

I had to take advantage of the nice weather again and so I went for a walk to the Armthorpe Pit Top area, passing through Sandall Beat Wood on the way.

When I reached the carpark at the entrance to Sandall Beat Wood I had to carefully read this sticker right to the bottom to discover that it wasn't genuine.

There wasn't anything to photograph in the wood, but the pit top area at the other side of the railway line is a bit more interesting.

I returned home by walking right alongside the racecourse track, it's not an official footpath, but plenty of people use it.

Loversall And Wadworth In The Snow

One of my regular lockdown walks; the snow provided a bit of variety today. I enjoyed walking in the virgin snow wherever I could find it - it wasn't very deep and there wasn't much of it left.

After leaving Loversall I walked down the road to Wadworth. It's a pity that there isn't a path that goes across the fields, but the motorway is in  the way.

Carr Lodge Local Nature Reserve was flooded and frozen over, so I didn't go home that way.

Flooding At Sprotbrough

Because of the recent heavy rainfall I planned to walk to the waterfall in the Don Gorge that's near Conisbrough Viaduct; I didn't get that far though because of the flooding and the weather turning quite unpleasant.

As I passed through the park at Hexthorpe I noticed the The Dell area was still cordoned off because of flood water.

A few minutes later this was the first area of flooding I reached as I walked on the riverside footpath, I was able to get by by using a higher path.

 

I didn't even attempt the second flooded section, I had to turn back and walk through the housing estates at Hexthorpe and then Warmsworth until I reached the path that goes down to the river near the cemetery at Warmsworth.

As I approached Sprotbrough it started to snow and so I decided to not go any further, instead I returned to Doncaster, staying well away from the river...although I doubt there'd be any problems with flooding on the other bank.
