Askern, Braithwaite, Kirkhouse Green, and Hawkhouse Green

Today's walk has been a local themed walk featuring trees. I travelled the seven miles to Askern, a placename that's a combination of Old Norse and Old English and means 'house near an ash tree.'

After getting off the bus at the boating lake I  took  the footpath going east, to the south of some houses, and after a mile briefly passed through Alder Wood.

I walked through some lovely wildflower meadows...and there would be more to come.

This horse wasn't being bothered by the flies and the alpacas were just a bit curious.

I continued to Mill Dike Bridge near Trumfleet and then walked along the road, soon passing Willow Bridge Farm and then Willow Bridge.

It wasn't long until I  reached Braithwaite.

I walked along the towpath, heading north; there were several boats on the canal.

After about a mile I took a footpath heading off to the left; I didn't get far though until the path became waterlogged and overgrown. So, I returned to the towpath and then walked along the road to Kirkhouse Green.

This lorry was just approaching the mobile homes park there.

I continued along the road for a few more minutes before taking a rather overgrown, but passable path to Hawkhouse Green. According to the map there's an 'Ash Hill Farm' there.

There's a Fir Tree Farm at Moss, but I stayed to the south of the village, using back lanes and then the direct road to get back to Askern.

Phoenix Park and Sprotbrough Tearooms

A short drive out to Thurnscoe today with my support worker to meet my dad and brother at Phoenix Park; we all managed to get to the top of the hill without any problems.

Siobhan and myself went to the nearby antiques centre and my brother joined us. He then went home and on the way back to Doncaster the two us called at Sprotbrough Tearooms for cream teas.

Market Rasen and Tealby

Today I had another day out with Siobhan, my support worker. We went to Tealby, the prettiest village in the Lincolnshire Wolds. We started by having breakfast at the cafe in Everton, just east of Bawtry, and then continued to the market town of Market Rasen.  There's not a lot to see there but we did spend a bit of time looking in the charity shops.

Tealby is a really pretty village, it wasn't looking its best in the drizzle though.

On the way back home we called in at Everton again, this time for tea and cakes.

Oxspring, Thurgoland, Hood Green, and Dodworth

Another walk starting at Oxspring. Today I headed to the southeast, following the River Don downstream for about a mile. The walk started with a shed mocked up to look like a giant cockerel - the photograph isn't very good though

I passed under this viaduct; I would be joining the TransPennine Trial later, but not at the location I had planned.

There was a short climb up a road and across some open countryside until I reached Huthwaite Hall, nothing more than a large farmhouse.

I hadn't studied the map in enough detail and at the location where I was expecting the path to cross the TransPennine Trail the trail wasn't there, it was actually beneath my feet in a tunnel - the trail runs along the route of an old railway line.

I had to take a path that went to Thurgoland, a rather unattractive village. The church there is Victorian and nothing special.

I walked through the village and down the lane to access the TransPennine Trail - I stayed on it for about a mile before heading off to the northeast towards Hood Green.

I continued heading northeast to reach Dodworth with its frequent bus services back into Barnsley.
